Plates with Purpose Gala to Tackle Childhood Hunger in Fairfield and Westchester Counties

Filling in the Blanks will host the Fifth Annual Plates with Purpose Gala on October 5, at The Loading Dock in Stamford. This year, the event will feature an exceptional culinary lineup, including renowned chefs such as Luke Venner of Elm, Anthony Kostelis of The Whelk, and Jared Falco of Bar Rosina’s, among others. These talented chefs will curate a gourmet tasting experience for attendees, providing a delightful journey through local and innovative cuisine.

The gala supports Filling in the Blanks’ mission to combat childhood hunger by providing weekend meal bags to thousands of children in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. The organization currently serves 8,660 children week ly across Connecticut and New York, and since its founding in 2013, it has provided over three million meals. The event plays a crucial role in raising both awareness and the necessary funds to continue their work. In addition to their weekend meal bags, Filling in the Blanks has introduced a mobile food pantry, Fresh Food on the Move, which has already distributed over 500,000 pounds of food to families in need in areas like Norwalk and Stamford.

Plates with Purpose ensures that Filling in the Blanks can continue purchasing 99% of the food it distributes, guaranteeing the quality and freshness of the meals provided to families.

The event will also honor Joe Hoffman, CEO of Cellmark, as its inaugural Philanthropist of the Year. Hoffman and his family have been long-time supporters of Filling in the Blanks, frequently volunteering at packing events and working with the mobile food pantry. His contributions have played a significant role in the organization’s success, helping to expand their reach and impact. Hoffman noted, “Seeing firsthand the impact they are having on people’s lives is truly inspiring. My wife and daughters have also volunteered, and both learn and take away some great life lessons.” Mar Jennings, America’s top lifestyle expert, Emmy nominated television host, and entrepreneur, will serve as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies, bringing his dynamic and philanthropic spirit to the stage. His involvement further underscores the event’s importance in the local community.

Childhood hunger remains a significant issue in Fairfield and Westchester Counties, with over 34,000 children experiencing food insecurity. The effects of hunger on academic performance are well-documented, with 76% of teachers observing a decline in students’ focus and behavior due to food insecurity. These alarming statistics drive Filling in the

Blanks’ mission, and events like the Plates with Purpose Gala are vital to continuing this critical work. The organization not only provides immediate assistance through weekend meal bags but also works toward long-term solutions by fostering community involvement and awareness.

Support from local sponsors has been instrumental in the event’s success, with early sponsors including Moffly Media, Stamford Magazine, J.P. Morgan Wealth Management, and The Conheeny Family. Their contributions, along with those of many other families and businesses, ensure that Filling in the Blanks can maintain and grow its programs. In addition, corporate and individual sponsorship opportunities remain available for this year’s gala, offering local businesses and community members the chance to make a meaningful impact on childhood hunger.

Filling in the Blanks is a volunteer-driven organization, and its community engagement efforts provide a hands-on approach to philanthropy for both adults and children. The organization’s success is a testament to the power of grassroots efforts, and Plates with Purpose represents a culmination of community-driven action against childhood hunger.

For those interested in attending, sponsorships, or making a donation, more information can be found on the organization’s website at www.fillingintheblanks.org. The site also offers opportunities to volunteer or register for upcoming meal-packing events, ensuring that there are numerous ways to get involved in supporting the fight against childhood hunger.

With this event, Filling in the Blanks hopes to inspire more individuals and businesses to join in the fight, proving that together, communities can make a substantial difference in the lives of children in need.
