The Young Women’s League of New Canaan recently honored New Canaan-based Filling in the Blanks (the local chapter of Blessings in a Backpack) with its “Rookie of the Year” grant.
“A perfect recipe for doing good is when a nonprofit supports another nonprofit,” Anna Diamantis, co-chariman of the league’s upcoming Couture for a Cause fund-raiser, said. “Such is the case with Filling in the Blanks, which provides food over the summer for kids whose families receive a weekend’s supply of food in a backpack from the local chapter of Blessings in a Backpack. These two organizations support Domus and Trailblazers Academy in Stamford, as well as Bedford Hills Elementary School in Westchester.”
Tina Kramer and Shawnee Knight started volunteering with Blessings in a Backpack in 2013. As soon as they realized that the program took a hiatus at the end of each school year, they knew that those kids would miss out on regular nutritious meals over the summer, “and that just didn’t sit well with them,” according to a release.
According to Kristin Thomas, charity research chairman for the YWL, “We knew they were dedicated and driven to really change the lives of these children. They embody this year’s giving theme, Help a Child … Change the Community, so we knew we had to create a new designation for them; they became our ‘Rookie of the Year.’”
The league will be holding its annual Couture for a Cause event on Friday, May 9, at the Loading Dock in Stamford, the proceeds from which will be distributed to Filling in the Blanks and Blessings in a Backpack, as well as other grant recipients, STAR, Inspirica, and buildOn.
The event features a fashion show and models will include YWL members, Kramer and Knight, some New Canaan Newcomers Club members, and others.
